Research at the Institute of Forming Technology and Lightweight Construction
Date: Friday, February 15, 2013
Place: EA 409
Prof. A. Erman Tekkaya introduces the Institute of Forming Technology and Lightweight Construction (IUL) of Technische Universität Dortmund. At first he describes the organizational structure of the institute, including personnel, technical equipment, international network and financing. In the main part of his speech, Prof. Tekkaya presents some of the institute’s most interesting current research projects, including works on innovative forming procedures for light metals as well as high-strength materials, flexible and resource-efficient manufacturing processes and load-optimized products. The institute’s research activities are conducted in the five departments of sheet metal forming, bulk metal forming, bending, non-conventional processes and applied mechanics in forming technology. Besides its activities on innovation in metal forming technology, the IUL is one of the first manufacturing engineering institutes that scientifically deals with the improvement of the education of engineering students. Prof. Tekkaya shows the latest results on this important topic and also presents the unique international master study program “Master of Science in Manufacturing Technology” of Technische Universität Dortmund.
About the Speaker:
A. Erman Tekkaya is professor at Technische Universität Dortmund, Germany, and leads the Institute of Forming Technology and Lightweight Construction (IUL). He is also adjunct professor at the Manufacturing Engineering Department of ATILIM University in Ankara/Turkey, where he is the founding director of the “Metal Forming Center of Excellence”. Having received his BSc and MSc degrees from Middle East Technical University in Ankara/Turkey in mechanical engineering, he completed his doctoral study with Professor K. Lange at University of Stuttgart in Germany. In 2012, he received an honorary doctorate of the Faculty of Engineering of Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany.
Prof. Tekkaya has been editor-in-chief of the “Journal of Materials Processing Technology“(Elsevier) since 2007. He is fellow of the “International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP)” and member of the German “National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech)”, the “Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity (JSTP)”, and the “International Impulse Forming Group (I²FG)”. Prof. Tekkaya is member of the advisory board and currently vice-chairman of the “International Cold Forging Group (ICFG)” of the ICFG. He is member of the review board for manufacturing technology of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation).
His research interests are metal forming technology, modeling of manufacturing processes and material characterization. Also engineering education is a prime interest of his. He published several hundreds of journal and conference papers on these topics and co-authored various books such as Formability of Metallic Materials (Springer) and Sheet Metal Forming (ASM).
