A Chemist is an Engine Designer’s Best Friend: Chemistry for Automotive Exhaust Emission Control

This talk will focus on the catalytic technologies for controlling the exhaust emissions originating from internal combustion engines used in modern automotive applications. A particular emphasis of the talk will be the next generation “lean-burn” engine emission control systems utilizing the “NOx Storage Reduction” (NSR) technology which has been recently innovated by the Toyota Motor Company in Japan. Implications of the recent environmental regulations in the EU and the US on the automotive sector and the exhaust emission control technologies will be also discussed. Finally, design of “atomically fine-tuned” novel automotive catalysts using modern tools of nanotechnology and surface science in the Ozensoy research labs will be described.

About the Speaker:

Emrah Ozensoy received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Bilkent University Chemistry Department (summa cum laude) in 1999 and continued his graduate studies at Texas A&M University Chemistry Department where he received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry in 2004. Next, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Environmental Molecular Sciences Division in between 2004-2006.

Dr. Ozensoy was appointed as an Assistant Professor and started his own research group at Bilkent University Chemistry Department in 2006. His research interests focus on nano-structures with novel catalytic, electronic and structural properties as well as the design and synthesis of novel photocatalysts and automotive emission catalysts.

Dr. Ozensoy received various prestigious awards including:

• North American Catalysis Society Richard J. Kokes Award (2003),
• American Vacuum Society Graduate Research Award (2003),
• Celanese Chemicals Research Award (2004),
• American Vacuum Society “Morton M. Traum Award” (2004),
• Outstanding Young Investigator “TUBA-GEBIP” Prize, Turkish Academy of Sciences, (2010),
• Parlar Foundation Research Prize, M.E.T.U. Prof. M. PARLAR Foundation, (2012).

Dr. Ozensoy is among the founders of the Turkish Catalysis Society (also serving as the current secretary) and a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), North American Catalysis Society and American Vacuum Society (AVS). He has also organized multiple international conferences and workshops on catalysis and nanomaterials.
