Development and fabrication of micro-grooved heat pipes for high-flux electronic cooling applications

A micro-grooved heat pipe for high heat flux electronic cooling applications will be investigated using theroetical, numerical and experimental techniques, and a design methodology for the analysis and design of an integrated system will be developed. In the first phase, the fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena in micro-grooved structures will be modeled using a theoretical approach; and the second phase will utilize the results of the first phase in the development of a numerical model for the analysis of a micro-grooved heat pipe with multiple channels, including the electronic component to be cooled. In the final phase, the results of the developed numerical model will be utilized for the design of the micro-grooved heat pipe. The heat pipe will be fabricated by using both lithography based nanofabrication techniques and micro-machining based micro-fabrication technique. The effect of the design parameters on the heat pipe performance will be investigated. The experimetal results will be compared with the numerical results obtained in the first and second phases. The effect of working fluid type, and different micro-groove geometries and sizes will be theoretically and experimentally investigated.
